Biographical Note

George Stambaugh was born circa 1851 in Franklin County, Ohio and attended The Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College (later The Ohio State University) from 1875-1876. He married his cousin Alice Rebecca Muhl in November 1886, after a courtship via letters. Stambaugh taught bookkeeping in Indiana and Louisiana, and briefly worked for the Central Hospital for the Insane in Jacksonville, Illinois. He started working for the United States Post Office as a transportation clerk in 1884 and settled in Falls Church, Virginia, remaining with the postal service until his retirement in 1925. George and Alice had three children: Josephine, born 1892, Ralph, born 1894, and Anna May, born 1897. Josephine and Anna May are both Ohio State University graduates, and Josephine worked as a clerk for the Library of Congress in 1930. Ralph was drafted for World War I in 1917; he died in France in 1918.

Scope and Contents

The Stambaugh Family Papers include correspondence, newspaper clippings, event programs, ticket stubs, Confederate currency, a scrapbook, and a 19th century diploma on vellum. The correspondence of George Stambaugh includes many details of his life and work as a teacher in the late 19th century; he also described the conditions at the Central Hospital for the Insane in Jacksonville, Illinois, where he worked for a time. His journal reveals additional details about his work, as well as his state of mind as he was courting his future wife Alice. The correspondence of Alice Muhl Stambaugh and her family dates from the Civil War period to the turn of the century. It contains not only details about newsworthy events of the time, but also includes exchanges of knitting patterns, recipes, and other materials relevant to home economics of the period. The letters and postcards of Ralph Stambaugh reveal many details of his time in the U.S. military during World War I, and the correspondence of Josephine and Anna May Stambaugh contains information about their time as students at Ohio State. There are additional documents, including family budgets, student rolls from George Stambaugh's days as a teacher, wills and pension documents, and ephemeral items like programs and currency.
