                <emph render="italic">Dark Rider</emph> is a fictional retelling of the life of American novelist, Stephen Crane. The novel was written by Louis Zara and published in 1961. The Louis Zara Papers contain a galley proof and an edited typescript for novel, as well as Zara's research on Stephen Crane. Research materials include photographs, original and photocopied letters from the Crane family, maps, and book reviews of Stephen Crane’s published works. Approximately half of the book reviews are written in German, and half in English. An album of notes and photographs is also included, as well as correspondence between Zara and others in the publishing industry regarding 
                <emph render="italic">Dark Rider</emph>. Materials date from 1896-1900, and 1926-1962.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>
                <emph render="italic">Dark Rider</emph> is a fictional retelling of the life of American novelist, Stephen Crane. The novel was written by Louis Zara (1910-2001) and published in 1961. In addition to writing ten historical novels, Zara was also a publisher at the Ziff-Davis Publishing Company and the Follet Publishing Company, as well as an editor of books and magazines.</p>
            <p>Stephen Crane (1871-1900) was an American novelist who authored the 1895 novel, 
                <emph render="italic">The Red Badge of Courage</emph>, which detailed the psychological experiences of a soldier during the American Civil War. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 28 in Badenweiler, Germany.</p>

            <p>The Louis Zara Papers contain a galley proof and an edited typescript for the 1961 historical novel, 
                <emph render="italic">Dark Rider</emph>, written by Louis Zara. The collection also includes Zara's research on the book’s protagonist, Stephen Crane.
