Biographical Note
Peter De Vries (1910-1993) was an American novelist born in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Calvin College in Michigan and later served as an editor for
Poetry magazine and the
New Yorker magazine. Upon his hiring at the
New Yorker, De Vries settled in Westport, Connecticut, where he lived the rest of his life. He wrote twenty-three novels, a play, and many short stories, as well as essays and poetry. De Vries was known for his comedic writing, frequent use of puns and wordplay throughout his works, and his views on the Dutch Reformed Church in which he was raised. De Vries died at a hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut, at the age of 83.

The Prick of Noon, dated before 1983, 1984, contains corrected typescripts and galley proofs for Peter De Vries's novels
Slouching Towards Kalamazoo and
The Prick of Noon, which were released in 1983 and 1985, respectively. De Vries submitted the typescripts for each of his novels to the editor, who then corrected them and sent them back to him at his home in Westport, Connecticut. After corrections were made, galley proofs were then composed and printed, showing how each page would look once printed, including typeface choices. Once these were approved, the final works were printed and published for release.
