            <abstract id="ref19" label="Abstract">James Ball Naylor was an American author, playwright, and physician from Malta, Ohio whose works included poetry, plays, reviews, short stories, speeches, political songs, advertisements, and novels for children and adults. The James Ball Naylor Papers date from circa 1895-1940, and contain typescripts and holograph manuscripts of James Ball Naylor’s plays and other works. Typescripts include two comedy sketches, a “rural drama,” a musical comedy, a novel, and a children’s serialization of verses. Holograph manuscripts include two short stories and two novels.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>James Ball Naylor (1860-1945) was an American author and physician from Malta, Ohio whose works included poetry, reviews, short stories, speeches, political songs, advertisements, and novels for children and adults. His works often explored the rural communities of Ohio and Appalachia, and were written in a traditional realism style that became less popular after 1910. He used a pseudonym for some of his works, “S.Q. Lapius”, meant as a play on the Roman god of healing, Aesculapius, and his second wife, Lena, would sometimes recopy his writing before sending it to publishers. His first book was 
                <emph render="italic">Current Coins Picked Up at a Country Railway Station</emph>, followed by other serializations in 
                <emph render="italic">The Ohio Farmer</emph> and 
                <emph render="italic">Ohio State Journal</emph>. Popular novels of Naylor’s include 
                <emph render="italic">The Cabin in the Big Woods</emph>, 
                <emph render="italic">The Kentuckian</emph>, 
                <emph render="italic">Dicky Delightful in Rainbow Land</emph>, and 
                <emph render="italic">Ralph Marlowe</emph>. Naylor also wrote a column from 1913-1923 in the 
                <emph render="italic">Marion Star</emph>.</p>

            <p>The James Ball Naylor Papers contain typescripts and holograph manuscripts of James Ball Naylor’s plays and other works, with one recorded under his pen name “S.Q. Lapius.” Typescripts include two comedy sketches, a “rural drama,” a musical comedy, a novel, and a children’s serialization of verses. Holograph manuscripts include two short stories and two novels. Materials date from circa 1895-1940.</p>
