            <abstract id="ref45" label="Abstract">The American Mercury was a monthly literary magazine, founded by H. L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan in 1924 to offer satire and commentary on American politics, life, and customs. The magazine frequently ran fiction and other articles by famous American authors and satirists, but began to decline in popularity by the late 1920s. Mencken resigned from his editorial position in 1933, and the magazine spent the remainder of its years being sold and resold to new publishers, growing increasingly anti-Semetic, anti-feminist, and pro-Nazi. The

            <p>
                <emph render="italic">The American Mercury</emph> was a monthly literary magazine founded by H. L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan in 1924 to offer satire and commentary on American politics, life, and customs.
