<p>Starting around the 1880s, camping and boating, especially on the Thames River, became popular in England. People would camp on the banks of rivers when taking longer boating trips. Camping continued to grow in popularity in England into the 20th century. Thomas Hiram Holding published several books on camping, including
<emph render="italic">The Camper's Handbook</emph> in 1908, and founded the Association of Cycle Campers in 1901. Additionally, Robert Baden-Powell published
<emph render="italic">Scouting for Boys</emph> also in 1908, starting the Scout movement. These publications are considered the basis of 20th century recreational camping.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
<p>The Photograph Album of People, Camping, and Travel, Primarily in Southern England contains black and white photographs, dated 1906-1908, that show people camping, traveling, and boating mostly in Southern England. Also included are photographs of landscapes and buildings, such as churches and castles. Many of the photographs show places in or near Swindon, the Broads, and Devon. The album also includes portraits and group portraits of unidentified people.</p>
<p>Titles in the collection inventory with quotation marks were copied from the album. Some photographs did not have titles in the album and were given titles. Also, pages or photographs with the same or similar titles were grouped together in the collection inventory whenever possible. Pages 11, 29 and 41 do not contain photographs, and there is one loose photograph that was inserted between pages 38 and 39.</p>
