Husband Al Ashley and wife Abby Lu Ashley cowrote their first En Garde! fanzine in 1942 while living in Battle Creek, Michigan. En Garde! Zine contains issues #2, #7, #9, #10, #11, #12, #13, #14, #15, #16, and #17. The issues were published from 1942-1946 with Fantasy Amateur Press Association (FAPA) mailing. This science fiction fanzine often explored the concept of the Slan Shack, also known as a science fiction house.</abstract>

            <head>Historical Note</head>
            <p>A zine is an original work or collection of texts and images that are self-published in small, limited batches. In the 1940s the creation of the term fanzine came from individuals self-publishing science fiction zines. Husband Al Ashley and wife Abby Lu Ashley cowrote their first En Garde! fanzine in 1942 while living in Battle Creek, Michigan. They worked with Jack Wiedenbeck to create the airbrushed cover art for the zine publications.</p>

            <p>En Garde! Zine contains issues #2, #7, #9, #10, #11, #12, #13, #14, #15, #16, and #17. Issue #2 is missing the cover art.
