                <emph render="italic">The Wizard</emph> by Henry Rider Haggard, first published in 1896, is a novel set in south central Africa about the interactions between an English Christian missionary and a tribe of African people, including the tribe’s “Chief of the Wizards.” Newton Whittaker was a book illustrator. Newton Whittaker Pen and Ink Drawings for J. M. Dent &amp; Sons Limited First Edition of “The Wizard” by H. Rider Haggard, dated circa 1940, contain drawings created by Whittaker that were used as illustrations for the 1940 edition of 
                <emph render="italic">The Wizard</emph>. A copy of the published book is also included.</abstract>

            <head>Historical Note</head>
            <p>
                <emph render="italic">The Wizard</emph> by Henry Rider Haggard, first published in 1896, is a novel set in south central Africa about the interactions between an English Christian missionary and a tribe of African people, including the tribe’s “Chief of the Wizards.” Haggard was an English writer of adventure novels primarily set in Africa. He served as part of the British colonial government in South Africa before returning to England and becoming a writer.</p>
            <p>Newton Whittaker was a book illustrator.</p>
