Historical Note

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement is an international activist movement originally beginning in the Black community that protests against violence and systemic racism toward Black people, particularly in racial profiling, police brutality, and racial inequality. The movement started in 2013 when the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter started spreading on social media in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi later built on the hashtag and call of action to create a national network of over 30 local chapters between 2014 and 2016. Since then it has transformed from a national movement in the United States into an international movement.

Zines are self published or published by small, independent publishers. Historically, zines have represented marginalized voices or non-mainstream communities. They are often produced in small quantities and can only be obtained through specific routes, such as distribution lists. Zines take their name from "fan magazine," which were first published in the 1930s within science fiction fandom.
