Biographical Note

Maximilian Nirdlinger (1881-1966) was an architect who primarily worked in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; he was active from around 1897 to around 1947. He was a member of the Pittsburgh chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Nirdlinger worked for the architecture firm of Furness and Evans in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1897 to 1899, and is known to have worked as an independent architect in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania after 1903, though he still maintained affiliations with other architecture firms throughout his career. From circa 1905 to circa 1909, Nirdlinger headed an architecture firm called Nirdlinger and Simpson in Pittsburgh with David Simpson; this firm primarily designed residences in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Besides residences, Nirdlinger also designed commercial buildings such as banks, theatres, office buildings, garages, and department stores.

Nirdlinger" consist of images with captions of Nirdlinger's architectural projects, placed into a photograph album; this album was compiled some time after 1989, based on when the company who manufactured it (Holson Burnes Group, Inc.) was founded. Many of the images appear to have been cut out of "A Book of Architectural Work Executed by M. Nirdlinger," a self-published book by Nirdlinger dated 1925; this book contained as-built front and side elevation images of commerical buildings and residences designed by Nirdlinger. Many of these buildings were constructed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with several in Ohio and other parts of Pennsylvania.
