Historical Note

Women poets of 19th century America published largely in newspapers, magazines, and literary periodicals, often anonymously. Common topics found in their poetry include love, marriage, family, domestic life, nature, death, and religion. Poetry by women in the 19th century also included social and political commentary on current events, such as westward expansion and the removal of Native Americans from their homes, anti-slavery and abolitionist movements, prohibition, industrialization, and the Civil War.

As of 2020, Larry R. Michaels is a former Resource Pastor at Hope Lutheran Church in Toledo, Ohio, and a former English professor at the University of Toledo. Michaels has written several books about the history of northwest Ohio, and edited "The New World: Selected Poems of Sarah Piatt, 1861-1911," published in 1999.

Scope and Contents

Larry R. Michaels Introduction and Bibliographies for "A Bibliography of 19th Century American Women Poets" includes digital files of bibliographies of the works of thirty-one American female poets from the 19th century, compiled by Larry Michaels circa 2019 and 2020, as well an introduction written by Michaels in 2020. The introduction outlines the intention of the bibliography, sources used, how the poets were selected for inclusion, and the format of the individual bibliographies. Each poet's bibliography includes a chronological list of their work published in books, periodicals, and anthologies. The bibliographies also include a list of published reviews of the poet's work, where applicable, and a list of biographical resources and criticisms.
