Paper toys date back to ancient times. The history of paper toys can be traced back to the art of origami.The word is based on the Japanese words Ori, which means to fold, and Kami, which means paper. However origami's roots are from China and it spread to Japan somewhere around the sixth century.
A paper doll is a two-dimensional figure drawn or printed on paper for which accompanying clothing has also been made. It may be a figure of a person, animal or inanimate object. The term may be extended to include similar items made of materials other than paper, such as plastic, cloth or wood. The term also may include three-dimensional dolls and their costumes that are made exclusively of paper. Collectors sometimes extend their collections to include other toys printed on paper, such as paper airplanes, cars and trains, animals and birds, villages, furniture and so on.
The Carson Reider Collection of Paper Toys and Communication Ephemera contains three formats of printed material; paper dolls, paper ephemera including postcards and trading cards, and children's books. Included in the collection are paper dolls featuring illustrations by Grace Drayton, Queen Holden, and Marilyn Henry. Printing companies found in the collection include Raphael Tuck and Sons and Whitney Made company. Raphael Tuck and Sons is one of the best known manufacturers of antique paper dolls. The company began in 1866 in London, and expanded to open offices in New York and Paris.
Series 1 contains paper dolls showcasing popular fashions and actresses spanning 1894 to 1998. Some dolls have been cut from magazines or other sources, other dolls are still intact within books. A few well known illustrators are included; Grace Drayton became the illustrator of Campbell Kids advertisments.

Series 2 contains various printed communication ephemera spanning 1876 to 1975 including postcards for holidays and non-holidays, die cuts, calling cards, and advertisment trading cards.
Series 3 contains various printing methods covering 1916 to 1993. Alternate covers include cloth, linen and spiral bound editions. Several well known illustrators are also represented in the collection, including Isabel C. Byrum, Florence Salter, and Ruth E. Newton.
