Biographical Note

Kibo Kodama (1898-1971) was a Japanese artist originally from Hiroshima who painted traditional landscapes, flowers, birds and other animals, abstract expression paintings, and historical figures. He painted mostly in ink and oil paints for his pieces. He became a member of the Japan Academy of Fine Arts in 1927. Kodama received multiple awards for his pieces, and after his death many of his works were donated to the Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum.

Shoden Sanso is an estate in Kyoto’s Uji city that was built on the remains of an estate that belonged to Fujiwara no Motofusa (1144-1230), an Imperial regent during Japan’s Heian era. It remains unknown who built Shoden Sanso. The land was purchased in 1918, while the buildings were constructed between 1919 to 1930. It has since been developed by Sohan Takaya for tea ceremonies. Kodama took inspiration from Shoden Sanso in building his tea house after visiting the estate.
