Zines are handmade publications with low costs of creation and distribution, that can focus on one or several topics as a means to connect with other individuals who share similar views and interests. Zines typically fall outside of mainstream publishing, allowing creators the freedom to discuss diverse topics and express themselves without restrictions. BIPOC (Black/Indigenous People of Color) creators may use zines as a medium to share their own stories and discuss topics that are not commonly found within mainstream media. Despite not being seen as a profitable endeavor, zines are viewed as an accessible form of publishing that can be used as a tool to give marginalized individuals a voice and build a community.
