Jacques Cheréau (1688-1776) was a printmaker and publisher of Vue d’Optiques optical prints in Paris. Vue d’Optiques or "perspective views" were a type of etching popular in second half of the 18th century into the 19th century. The prints depict scenes that have a linear perspective that could convey the illusion of depth when viewed through devices such as a peepshow, optiques, or a zograscope. Twelve Vue d'Optiques of Paris Created by Jacques Cheréau contains Vue d’Optiques prints which are joined together to form one continuous scroll. Each end of the scroll is attached to a wooden tube by a section of linen fabric. Each of the twelve hand colored prints depicts a scene or location in Paris. The scroll measures 13.5 inches high and approximately 219.25 inches long. Material dates from the 18th century.
