World War II took place from 1939 to 1945; it involved over 30 countries and caused 40 to 50 million deaths. The two sides were the Axis powers, which included Germany, Italy, and Japan, and the Allied powers, which included France, Great Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union, and China. The United States officially entered the war on the side of the Allies after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941, sending troops to both the European and Pacific theatres of war.
