Recipes are a set of instructions for preparing a particular dish, including a list of the ingredients required. They have been written for many centuries for food dishes, as well as cosmetics and medicinal cures, but the compilation of recipes into cookbooks and recipe books became popular in 17th century English homes when England’s literacy rate among women improved. Recipe books from the American New England region usually include cuisine featuring seafood and dairy products due to nearby fishing and dairy farming. The Mrs. George Vates Recipe and Domestic Activities Book is dated 1890s-1910s, and contains handwritten recipes, and clippings of recipes and other practical advice collected by Mrs. George Vates of Terryville, Connecticut. Recipes included are for cakes, pies, sorbets, ice cream, cookies, and other desserts, but also include relishes, salad dressings, soups, and meat dishes, including New England cuisine, such as several seafood and cranberry recipes. Recipe clippings include advice columns from homemakers of the New England area, on domestic topics such as making chicken feed, getting rid of ants, unclogging drains, and other common household and gardening concerns.
