Historical Note
The modern trucking industry began around 1910, with the invention of the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine, along with several other advances in technology. The Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC), which was established in 1935, began regulating the industry; and with the construction of the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s, the trucking industry expanded.
Matlack Trucking Company was started in circa 1900s, and appears to have been operating until circa 2001.
Log books are used by truck drivers to track their hours of service (HOS). The hours in the log are marked to the quarter hour and include the options “Off Duty,” “Sleeper Birth,” “Driving,” and “On Duty.” Logs must also include the main office address of the corporate headquarters of the motor carrier and the address of the driver’s home terminal. Any breakdowns or accidents must be noted and the log must be signed by the driver. Paper logs, which are now only used as backup, have been replaced by electronic devices that track HOS.
