Charles McGaw taught this course that is described in the course bulletin as, "practical instruction in making theatrical costumes. Materials and their uses. How to analyze a play for costume requirements. Sources for authentic period costumes." The Lecture Notes and Costume Design Paintings for Theatrical Costuming Course at Ohio State University contains Charles McGraw's typed and handwritten lecture notes with annotations along with sixty costume design paintings on rice paper with descriptions including page or plate numbers. The paintings are based on drawings and designs first presented in a 19th-century book on historical styles of dress. Materials are dated 1950.</abstract>

            <head>Historical Note</head>
            <p>The Ohio State University Department of Speech added the course Speech 641 starting in the 1946-1947, academic year. Charles McGaw is one of the professors who taught this course. Speech 641 is Theatrical Costuming, which was worth five credits and is described in the course bulletin as, "practical instruction in making theatrical costumes. Materials and their uses. How to analyze a play for costume requirements. Sources for authentic period costumes."</p>
            <p>Charles James McGaw (1910-1978) received his Bachelor of Arts (1932), Master of Arts (1937), and doctorate (1940) degrees from the University of Michigan. He was an assistant professor at Ithaca College from 1940-1942; Officer-Instructor at the United States Naval Academy from 1943-1946; assistant professor at the University of Michigan during the summer of 1946; Assistant Professor of Speech at Ohio State University (OSU) from 1946-1947; and Associate Professor of Speech at OSU from 1947-1957.</p>
