Historical Note

English coats of arms are distinct heraldic bearings of a person, family, or country. They are typically on a escutcheon (shield), surcoat, or tabard. English coats of arms are regulated and granted by the officer of arms, who run the College of Arms. The officers are appointed by the British Sovereign and have authority in all matters of heraldry, granting new coats of arms, genealogical research, and recording pedigrees. English heraldry uses a cadency system that allows family members to use the arms of the head of that family, but with a different mark, for example the second son adds a crescent. Daughters usually have their father's arms on a lozenge, or diamond-shaped charge. A charge is an image that occupies the field of an escutcheon. Wives usually bear their husband's arms on a shield or banner that has a small lozenge. If a woman is married and has her own arms, she can combine her or her father's arms with her husband's on one shield usually by impalement. Impalement is when there are two coats of arms side by side on a divided shield or escutcheon. When a woman becomes a widow, she can have her husband's arms alone on a lozenge or other type of display.
