Scrapbooks are blank books in which pictures, newspaper clippings, calling cards, greeting cards, postcards, tickets, and other pieces of ephemera are pasted into. Creating scrapbooks began to become a popular hobby during the 19th century, as a way to preserve family history, trip souvenirs, and to teach children how to organize and classify information.

The Northeast Ohio region is an area formed by six metropolitan areas in the northeastern part of Ohio: Cleveland–Elyria, Akron, Canton–Massillon, Youngstown–Warren, Mansfield, and Weirton–Steubenville. Historically, this area was a major manufacturing center. Its proximity to rivers, lakes, canals, and railroads made it easy to move goods and people into and out of the area. In particular, rubber manufacturing was a prominent industry in the area, with four companies headquartered there: the Goodrich Corporation, the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, and the General Tire company. Steel was also a major industry in this area. While there was a small number of law enforcement officers in the northeastern Ohio area previously, the Metropolitan Police Act, passed in 1866, established official police forces in major metropolitan areas. During the 19th century, most families in the area were working class, many of whom were impoverished and suffering from the lack of a public health system. These things, combined with the region being an industrial area, fostered crime.
