Mail art is a populist artistic movement centered on sending small scale works through the postal service. The movement initially began in the 1950s, by American artist Ray Johnson, whose activities were later referred to as the New York Correspondence School. Mail art continued to grow in popularity in the 1960s and 1970s with the Fluxus community of artists, who engaged in experimental art with an emphasis on the artistic process. Artistamps, or artist's stamps, are a form of postage stamp-like art pieces often included on mail art packages, and are typically not valid for postage.

As of 2018, C. Mehrl Bennett is a multi-media artist, performer, and writer of Fluxus scores and experimental poetry in Columbus, Ohio. She also works as a mail-artist, consultant editor and technical facilitator for Luna Bistone Prods publications, and as a contributing editor, artist and writer for arts and vispo related publications and websites. C. Mehrl Bennett is the wife of John M. Bennett, an experimental writer and former curator of the Avant Writing Collection at Ohio State University Libraries.
