Richard Ramsay Stander was a civil and construction engineer and businessman. The Richard Stander Collection of Maps and Other Paper Ephemera contains his collection of various maps as well as photographs, images and posters. Maps include world maps, parts of North and Central America, counties, territories, and states, with many of the maps having an Ohio theme. Most of the items in this collection are reproductions, there are very few originals. Materials are dated circa 1700s-2001.

Biographical Note
Richard Ramsay Stander (1919-2011) was a businessman from Mansfield, Ohio. He donated land for the construction of Ohio State University at Mansfield. Stander began his career in 1940, when he graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering; he then was a bituminous test inspector with the Ohio Department of Highways. Stander received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1965 from Ohio State University, a Master of Civil Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1966, and a Master of Business Administration from OSU in 1972. During World War II, he did research that led to a new type of floating bridge that accommodated larger and heavier armored vehicles. After the war Stander started the Mansfield Asphalt Paving company and was an early adopter of automatic paver screeds, pneumatic and vibratory rollers, and asphalt plant production. He retired in 1993. Stander collected maps throughout his lifetime and they were eventually donated to Ohio State University.
Scope and Contents
The Richard Stander Collection of Maps and Other Paper Ephemera contains his collection of various maps. Maps include world maps, parts of North and Central America, counties, territories, and states, with many of the maps having an Ohio theme. Also included are a portrait of Grover Cleveland, World War I photographs, and a Thanksgiving poster. Most of the items in this collection are reproductions, there are very few originals. Materials are dated circa 1700s-2001.
