Biographical Note

Paul J. Shartle, Jr. (1920–2016) was a sergeant in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. Having earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Otterbein University in 1942, Shartle enlisted in the Air Corps in June that same year, and volunteered to create the 361st Army Air Forces Band (later renamed the 661st Air Force Band in 1948). During the war, he was in charge of the band's weekly duties while it travelled throughout Ohio. Shartle was discharged in 1946.

After the war, Shartle settled in Kettering, Ohio with his wife, Dorothy, and their two sons. He taught in Kettering Local Schools, and remained active in local musical groups the rest of his life.
