Historical Note

As of 2018, the Nupe people, traditionally known as the Tapa by the neighbouring Yoruba tribe, are an ethnic group living in northern Nigeria. They are predominantly located in Niger state, but also in Kwara State and Kogi State. With about 3.5 million people, they are subdivided into smaller communities based on geographic location. Most men in the community work as either fishermen or farmers whereas the women prepare and sell the crops and other goods. Additionally, they have highly organized guilds of craftspeople that include bead workers, weavers, and pottery makers within the community.
