            <abstract id="ref8" label="Abstract">The David J. Skyrm Papers contains materials created or collected by David Skyrm, a United States Marine Corps member serving in World War II. Included in the collection is a scrapbook, created in or after 1945, containing photographs of fellow soldiers, Japanese prisoners of war, Chinese locals, and family photographs; accompanied by illustrations drawn by Skyrm; additional photographs (taken between 1944 and 1946); and two certificates of honorable discharge.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Private First Class David J. Skyrm (1926–1997) served in the Charlie Company of the 1st Marines Battalion in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Having enlisted on March 21, 1944 in Cleveland, Ohio, Skyrm was stationed in the Pacific during the war. During this time, he fought in the Battle of Okinawa (between April 1, 1945 and June 30, 1945), before later being stationed in Tientsin, China from October 1, 1945 to April 17, 1946. Skyrm was honorably discharged on May 11, 1946.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The David J. Skyrm Papers consists of a scrapbook, created in or after 1945, containing photographs of fellow soldiers, Japanese prisoners of war, Chinese locals, and family photographs; accompanied by illustrations drawn by Skyrm. Also included in the collection are further photographs, also taken in 1944 and later, and two letters of honorable discharge, issued on May 11, 1946.</p>
