Historical Note

Ohio State University's English department began as a small program headed by Joseph Millikin in 1873. The program then grew into the Department of Rhetoric and Literature, headed by Joseph Denney, until it finally became the Department of English. The building that still houses the department is named after Denney. Although the department honors its roots, classes in the modern English department are vastly different from what was offered in 1873. While the department still offers traditional classes about literary giants like Shakespeare and Milton, they now also offer classes on comics and video games. In 2017, Ohio State University's English department created a series of posters reflecting the variety of classes that were taught during the 2017-2018 school year.

The Ohio State University Department of English Posters advertise a series of undergraduate-level classes that were offered by Ohio State University's English department during the 2017-2018 school year. Fourteen classes are represented in the collection of posters in three different sizes. All of the posters are black and white with red accents. The posters combine graphics or photographs with a brief summary of the specific class represented on the poster. The classes offered on the posters focus on the department's Literature, Film, and Popular Culture Studies area of specialization. Within this focus, the classes cover everything from Shakespeare to Tolkein, from the English Bible to the American Comic Book.
