Historical Note

World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945. The United States joined the war on December 7, 1941, when Pearl Harbor was bombed by the Japanese. In 1943, there were numerous Allied victories in the Pacific and the Axis began retreating on all fronts. The United States Navy, Coast Guard, and Marines helped with these victories. The Navy grew during World War II and was instrumental to the "Island Hopping Campaign," where the United States gained military bases on many of the small islands in the Pacific. The Coast Guard was involved in many rescue operations after the Germans began sinking ships off the American coast. The Marines participated in many of the battles in the Pacific.
