Historical Note

In 1991, a Soviet coup d'état attempt took place from August 18th to 21st in Moscow. It was a reaction to U.S.S.R President Mikhail Gorbachev's reform program and the planned signing of the New Union Treaty. The coup was led by hard-line members of the Soviet government, known later as the "Gang of Eight," who declared a state of emergency in the U.S.S.R. and issued documents to the public over radio and television. Russian President Boris Yeltsin arrived in Moscow on the 19th and denounced the coup d'état attempt. Moscow Mayor Gavriil Popov supported Yeltsin's opposition. On the 21st three men were killed when violence broke out in Moscow, and coup attempts ended. The coup d'état attempt was later considered to be the event that marked the end of the Soviet Union.

Scope and Contents

The Collection on the 1991 Soviet Coup d'État Attempt contains original and photocopied newspapers, and photocopied documents, leaflets and appeals published during and after the coup attempt. These publications were produced by the Soviet government, Soviet hard-liners carrying out the coup d'état attempt, and other organizations. Some of the orders and appeals were signed by Boris Yeltsin and Gavriil Popov. All materials are dated between August 19th and 31st, 1991.
