Historical Note

Second-wave feminism was a period of feminist activity and thought that began in the early 1960s and lasted about two decades. Its aim was to increase equality for women; issues included rights concerning domestic issues, for example clothing and employment. In the 1960s, many women did not look for employment because of their domestic and household duties, which were seen as as their primary job. This left women isolated, and estranged from politics, economics, and law making. Second-wave feminism broadened the scope from first-wave feminism to include a wider range of issues including sexuality, family, the workplace, reproductive rights, and legal inequalities. This movement brought attention to other issues, such as domestic violence and marital rape.
