J.F. Rowley created the J.F.Rowley Company in Des Moines, Iowa in 1886. The company specialized in the manufacturing of artificial limbs. Rowley later moved his shop to Chicago where the J.F. Rowley Company was incorporated in 1904. Rowley patented over fifty improvements for artificial limbs over the course of his life. The success of the business in the United States transitioned overseas to British hospitals during the First World War. The British branch of the company located in Roehampton, England was known as the J.F.Rowley Ltd. Company. The company is still active in the United States as of 2018, and is known as J.F. Rowley Prosthetics & Orthotics Labs.
