Seymour Philip Rothman (1928-2000) was a native of New York City. Rothman enlisted in the United States military in 1950, and served in the Korean War. Rothman was a homosexual; correspondence found in this collection addresses both issues and challenges of being a gay man serving in the military in the 1950s, as well as several of Rothman's personal relationships (predominantly with longtime partner Charles Willard).
Correspondence Recieved by Seymour Philip Rothman consists of personal correspondence Seymour Philip Rothman received from gay friends, primarily other servicemen, and other acquaintances from 1950 through 1984; several years are missing, particularly in the 1970s. Several letters address challenges for gay military personnel serving during the Korean War. Correspondence can be found in the forms of letters, postcards, and cards. Letters detail the writers' personal lives, and many are from Rothman's longtime partner, Charles B. Willard, prior to Willard's unexpected death in 1974.
