Historical Note

World War I began in 1914 when the Archduke of Austria, Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated by Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip. The conflict involved many of the world’s economic powers, assembled into two opposing alliances: the Allies, consisting of Russia, France, Great Britain, Ireland, the United States, Italy, and Japan and the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary. The war ended in November of 1918, when Germany signed an armistice prepared by Britain and France.

On February 21, 1916, Germany attacked the city of Verdun in France. The Battle of Verdun was the largest and longest battle of World War I to take place on the Western Front. In December 1916, French counter-offensives were able to recapture much of the ground lost to Germany, and recover Fort Douaumont and Fort Vaux, resulting in a French victory. A medal was commissioned to commemorate the heroism of the defenders of Verdun, but it was ultimately awarded to all those who fought anywhere on the Argonne and St. Mihiel sectors between 1914 and 1918.
