 Biographical Note

Holly Anderson (1955-2017) was a poet, artist, writer, and lyricist. Her poetry was inspired by composer John Cage, who was her professional mentor. Anderson wrote lyrics for the bands Mission of Burma, Consonant, New Randy, and other musical performers, as well as doing graphic design work for Mission of Burma's album covers. She wrote poetry, fiction, and play scripts. Following September 11, 2001, Anderson volunteered at an emergency relief center at Ground Zero in New York City for several months; this time led her art and poetry in a more politicized direction. As a result, she participated in the Occupy Wall Street movement in 2011, and the "Nasty Women" art exhibit put on in conjunction with the Women's March on Washington in January 2017.

 Scope and Contents

The Holly Anderson Papers date from 1980s-2007, and consist of materials from Anderson's artistic life. These materials include poems, audio recordings on compact disc of songs written by Anderson, advertisements for poetry, play readings, and small press printings by Anderson, graphic design work for bands such as Mission of Burma and Consonant, reviews, and a short story. While Anderson wrote lyrics for songs performed by artists including Mission of Burma, Consonant, Lisa B. Burns, Chris Brokaw, and New Randy, her vocals were not included on the finalized recordings in this collection.
