Biographical Note

As of 2017, Samuel Coleman is a professor and researcher in the field of anthropology. His research focuses on post-World War II Japanese science and technology. Coleman received the Faculty Development Award from the Ohio Board of Regents, now known as the Ohio Department of Higher Education, in 1989. He served as the Associate Director for Research and Program Development in the Japan Center at North Carolina State University. Coleman has also taught at Harvard (1987), North Carolina State University (1982-1988), Case Western Reserve University (1988-1989), the University of Oregon (1989-1996), and several other institutions.

Scope and Contents

The Samuel Coleman Papers on Science and Technology in Post-World War II Japan contains reports, correspondence, articles, interviews, studies, notes, and other research materials from 1941-1990 related to Coleman’s research on post-World War II Japanese science and technology. Much of the research in this collection is focused on the effects of the United States’ occupation of Japan on scientific research and development at Riken, Japan’s Physical and Chemical Research Institute.
