 Historical Note

Artists' books are an art form that utilizes the anatomy of the book. Artists' books come in all formats including scrolls, accordion folds, pop-up paper cuts, and many other different artistic takes on a book. Since the early medieval period, artists have been involved in the production of books, but artist and poet William Blake is credited by writers as being the earliest adaptor of using books solely as art forms. In 1789, he and Catherine Blake, his wife, illustrated, printed, colored and self-bound several copies of Songs of Innocence and of Experience. Before and during World War I, avant-garde artists began to create and circulate pamphlets, posters, manifestos, and books as a way to circumvent traditional printing gallery systems. Radicalists adopted the practice as did Russian Futurists, and Dadaists, and Surrealists.

After World War II, artists and poets experimenting with form started to create artists' books. During the 1950s and 1960s, artists like Dieter Roth and Ed Ruscha produced large art collections that abstracted the form of the book. Conceptual artists adopted the artists' book in their works, and by the 1990s, artists' books were being made by contemporary and post-conceptual artists. Centers for Books Arts exist in cities and at colleges in the United States and where artists routinely share techniques and teach about artists' books in workshops and classes. Independent presses have also opened to support the work of artists using the book form as art.

Logan Elm Press was an independent press and was founded in 1978 in conjunction with Ohio State University Libraries’ Center for Book Arts. The press focused on preserving and advancing the longstanding technology used to create books and published unique, limited edition books that were often handmade as well as printing greetings cards, invitations, and broadsides. The press encouraged editors, designers, scholars, writers, and artists to work together through teaching, learning, and creating. Classes were offered by Logan Elm Press and students in these classes created invitations, greeting cards, and broadsides. Logan Elm Press suspended operations on August 1, 2015.

One of the classes offered at the Ohio State University to learn about books, their creation, and variations was ART 5558: Book Arts. The class explored the history and aesthetics of handmade artists books with an emphasis on structure, sequence, and relationship of image to text. Students made artists' books for the class.

This series is arranged chronologically. Within each year, materials are arranged alphabetically by last name of the author with works by unknown artists arranged at the end of that year. Materials with unknown years are listed at the end of the series and arranged by artist's last name and then alphabetically by title if the artist is unknown.
