 [Biographical/Historical] Note

Garry Cleveland Myers (1884-1971) and his wife, Caroline Myers (1887-1980), started Highlights for Children, which began publishing in June 1946. Before that, the Myers worked on Children's Activities, another childrens magazine, for twelve years, which they later bought and incorporated into Highlights.

Garry earned a PhD in psychology from Columbia University and he and Caroline taught illiterate soldiers in the US Army. Caroline was the first female teacher employed by the Army. Their experience teaching in the Army led to them becoming pioneers of elementary education. They taught parents and educators at Case Western Reserve University, during which time Garry wrote a nationally syndicated column titled Parent Problems and both Myers coauthored several books.

The Garry Cleveland and Caroline Myers Papers contain notes, journals, published material, day planners, drafts of writings by Myers including various radio addresses, and personal papers on the topics of child rearing and development and education collected and created by Garry Cleveland Myers and Caroline Myers from the years 1898-2014.
