He lived in Zanesville, Ohio. The Samuel S. Cox Diary Documenting Travels in Europe was written during Cox's honeymoon tour of European countries from May 7 to July 18, 1851, which he later used to publish 
                <emph render="italic">A Buckeye Abroad: or, Wanderings in Europe and the Orient</emph>, in 1852.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Samuel Sullivan Cox (1824-1889) was an Ohio Congressman and diplomat to the Ottoman Empire, working in politics from 1855 until his death in 1889. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, he graduated from Brown University in 1846. He published several books, including works on travel, and became editor of the 
                <emph render="italic">Ohio Statesman</emph> in 1853. Cox was strongly against the abolitionist movement, and believed in white supremacy, which can occasionally be seen in his journal entries, written works, and speeches before Congress.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The Samuel S. Cox Diary Documenting Travels in Europe was written by Cox during his honeymoon tour of European countries from May 7 to July 18, 1851, which he later used to publish 
                <emph render="italic">A Buckeye Abroad: or, Wanderings in Europe and the Orient</emph>, in 1852. Traveling with his wife, Julia, her brother Philo, and a cousin named Lucy, Cox visited France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, England, Ireland, parts of the Mediterranean, and Greece. Two news clippings concerning the British House of Commons are also pasted in the journal.</p>
