Lucius Clark Smith was a New Albany, Ohio resident during the 1860s, who worked as a schoolteacher and farmer. The Lucius Clark Smith Diaries contains two diaries kept by Smith during 1859, and November 17, 1861, to December 21, 1862. A schoolteacher and farmer, Smith’s diaries detail his daily farming routines and work in his family's cane mill, and trips to Etna, Columbus, Westerville, and Worthington to make sales. Smith also writes about the young men in the nearby Ohio Civil War regiment camps, discussing their illnesses and funerals he attends. General comments about major offensives and retreats in the war’s progress, news of friends serving in the Union Army, debates over slavery, and treasonable language arrests are also noted.
