            <abstract id="ref2" label="Abstract">Rosa Muhlenberg was the daughter of Henry Muhlenberg, who served as Pennsylvania’s congressional representative and Minister to Austria. After the death of his first wife, Henry married her sister, Rebecca Hiester (1781-1841). The Rebecca Heister Muhlenberg Collection of Bound Sheet Music Given to Her Daughter Rosa C. Muhlenberg contains a bound volume of sheet music originally belonging to Rebecca and later given to her youngest daughter, Rosa, in 1832. The volume, dated circa 1790s-1832, contains 8 scores, all in French, and includes mostly piano sonatos with harpischord and violin accompaniments. Each score contains a bookplate from "Christian Jacob Hutter's Musical Repository" in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Rosa Catherine Muhlenberg Nichols (1821-1867) was the daughter of Henry Muhlenberg (1782-1844), who served as Pennsylvania’s congressional representative from 1829-1838, and Minister to Austria from 1838-1840. After the death of his first wife, Mary Hiester, Henry married her sister, Rebecca Hiester (1781-1841). Rosa was their seventh child, and she and her mother traveled extensively together. Rebecca gave her daughter several of her music books during the 1830s as gifts.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The Rebecca Heister Muhlenberg Collection of Bound Sheet Music Given to Her Daughter Rosa C. Muhlenberg contains a bound volume of sheet music originally belonging to Rebecca Hiester Muhlenberg and later given to her youngest daughter, Rosa Catherine Muhlenberg, in 1832. The volume, dated circa 1790s-1832, contains 8 scores, all in French, and inscriptions inside the front cover indicate the date and transfer of ownership from Rebecca to Rosa. The scores includes mostly piano sonatos with harpischord and violin accompaniments. Each score contains a printed image, some of which are in color, and a bookplate from "Christian Jacob Hutter's Musical Repository" in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Hutter owned several newspaper and printing businesses in the early 19th century.</p>
