Zines are handmade publications that can focus on any topic, but are mainly produced to showcase topics that are ignored or overlooked by mainstream media. The low cost of producing a zine often makes it accessible to a wider audience which helped The Offense play a factor in the growth of the local Columbus punk and new wave scene. The Tim Anstaett Papers from Role as Editor of The Offense includes the first 15 issues and the final 16 issues published. There are additional items that include tickets to the zine's sponsored concerts, and a flyer advertising one of the concerts.  Historical Note

The Offense was an alternative music fanzine published in Columbus, Ohio. The zine was edited by Tim Anstaett, from its first issue in 1980 to its final in 1989. Before starting The Offense, Anstaett worked at a small club near the Ohio State University’s campus called Mr. Brown’s. There, he booked bands such as the Pixies and the Cocteau Twins. In Anstaett's view, the fanzine was introducing Columbus to better music and would bring a new era of music to the area.
