He was named the 14th poet laureate of the United States of America in 2006. The Donald Hall Papers are dated 1955-1961, 1983-1993, and 2014. Items include correspondence sent to Donald Hall discussing his poetry and editing work, poetry written by Hall, a magazine clipping on Hall’s life, and a postcard advertising a museum exhibit.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Donald Hall (1928-2018) was an American poet laureate who wrote about nature, rural life, and surrealism. He was the first poetry editor of 
                <emph render="italic">The Paris Review</emph>, from 1953 through 1961 and was awarded the Lamont Poetry Prize in 1955. In 1972, he married the poet Jane Kenyon, who was often a subject of his poems, particularly after her death in 1995. The 1998 book 
                <emph render="italic">Without</emph> discusses Hall’s grief over her death. Hall was named the 14th poet laureate of the United States of America in 2006, and wrote 50 books, 22 of which were poetry. In 2010, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts. Hall also received three nominations for the National Book Award in 1956, 1979, and 1993.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The Donald Hall Papers contain correspondence sent to Donald Hall discussing his poetry and editing work, poetry drafts and typescripts, published poetry booklets and pamphlets, a magazine clipping about Hall’s life, and a postcard advertising a museum exhibit for Hall's work. The majority of the correspondence is with Hall's editor, John Ciardi. Materials in this collection are dated 1955-1961, 1983-1993, and 2014.</p>
