            <abstract id="ref1" label="Abstract">Paula Bernat Bennett (born 1936) is, as of 2018, Professor Emerita of English at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. She is an expert on woman poets of the 19th century, with a particular interest in Sarah Piatt. Sarah (Sallie) Morgan Bryan Piatt (1836-1919) was an American poet from Kentucky. The Paula Bennett Transcriptions of Poetry by Sarah Piatt as Published in the 
                <emph render="italic">Louisville Journal</emph> and 
                <emph render="italic">New York Ledger</emph> in 1857-1861, dated circa 1990s, contains transcriptions of poems written by Piatt as a young woman, originally published in two newspapers between 1857 and 1861.</abstract>

            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Paula Bernat Bennett (born 1936) is, as of 2018, Professor Emerita of English at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. A native of Massachusetts, she earned her Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University in New York City. She is an expert on woman poets of the 19th century, with a particular interest in Sarah Piatt.</p>
            <p>Sarah (Sallie) Morgan Bryan Piatt (1836-1919) was an American poet from Kentucky. She was first published as a young woman under the name "Sallie M. Bryan" or "S.M.B." in the 1850s, and her first poetry book was published anonymously in 1871. She spent most of her adult life in North Bend, Ohio, near Cincinnati.</p>

            <head>Scope and Contents</head>
            <p>The Paula Bennett Transcriptions of Poetry by Sarah Piatt as Published in the 
                <emph render="italic">Louisville Journal</emph> and 
                <emph render="italic">New York Ledger</emph> in 1857-1861, dated circa 1990s, contains transcriptions of poems written by Piatt as a young woman, originally published in two newspapers between 1857 and 1861. Paula Bennett and her graduate assistant, Pamela Isner-Kincheloe, transcribed these poems from microfilm around the 1990s. Later, Kyle Roberts and Mary Manning, employees of the Rare Books &amp; Manuscripts Library at Ohio State University, proofed these transcripts and typed them up with their emendations indicated in red and green.</p>
