            <head>Biographical Note</head>
            <p>Richard Carl Timm was appointed to serve as the Photographic Officer for the USS (United States Ship) Mount Olympus, the flagship of the United States Navy's 1946-1947 Operation Highjump expedition to Antarctica. Timm reported for service in October of 1946, and the Mount Olympus left Norfolk, Virginia in December of 1946. The Mount Olympus entered the ice pack of the Ross Sea (Antarctica) on December 31, 1946, and departed for New Zealand on Februrary 27, 1947. Timm's photographs of the Antarctic sea and landscape and members of the Operation Highjump crew were taken during this time.</p>

            <p>The 35mm Color Slides Photographed by Richard Carl Timm While Serving as Photographic Officer on the USS Mount Olympus During Operation Highjump is comprised of 29 slides, and includes images of crew members on board the USS Mount Olympus, crew members on land in Antarctica, and landscape images of the sea, ice, and snow in and around Antarctica. The majority of the photographs are taken from vantage points on board the USS Mount Olympus, a small number are taken while standing on land. Materials date 1946 December-1947 February.</p>
