            <abstract id="ref1" label="Abstract">The USS (United States Ship) 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph> was a 
                <emph render="italic">Wind</emph>-class icebreaker that was commissioned into the United States Navy on December 28, 1946, and recommissioned into the United States Coast Guard as the USCGC (United States Coast Guard Cutter) 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph> on December 15, 1966. The 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph> undertook over 20 trips to the Arctic and Antarctic, including as a supply ship for Operation Highjump, Operation Windmill, and multiple Operation Deep Freeze expeditions before being decommissioned in 1978. 
                <emph render="italic">Keeping the Memory Alive: The Burton Island Story 1946-1978</emph> by E. Leonard Lambert Digital Book and Order Form dates from circa 2006, and consists of six compact discs and two order form copies. The compact discs consist of digital files containing photographs, logs, and remembrances.</abstract>

            <head>Historical Note</head>
            <p>The USS (United States Ship) 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph> was a 
                <emph render="italic">Wind</emph>-class icebreaker commissioned into the United States (US) Navy on December 28, 1946. 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph> was named after Burton Island off the coast of Delaware. During the ship's time in the US Navy, 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph> undertook over 20 trips to the Arctic and Antarctic, including as a supply ship for Operation Highjump and Operation Windmill. 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph> also assisted in scientific surveys and convoy exercises.</p>
            <p>On December 15, 1966, the US Navy transferred all of its icebreakers to the United States Coast Guard; the ship was thus recommissioned as the USCGC (United States Coast Guard Cutter) 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph> the same day. 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph> was used for icebreaking operations, and went on eight different Deep Freeze operations to the Antarctic from 1967 to 1978. The icebreaker also conducted scientific surveys, went on missions to Alaskan waters, and participated in search-and-rescue missions in New Zealand. 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph> was decommissioned on May 9, 1978 and sold in 1980. The icebreaker was scrapped on April 28, 1982.</p>
            <p>E. Leonard Lambert served as a Seaman, Boatswain's Mate Striker (BMSN) on the USS 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph> from 1960 to 1963, and passed away on March 20, 2013.</p>

                <emph render="italic">Keeping the Memory Alive: The Burton Island Story 1946-1978</emph> by E. Leonard Lambert Digital Book and Order Form dates from circa 2006, and consists of six compact discs and two order form copies. The compact discs consist of a digital book that was never physically published. It is made of PDFs containing photographs, logs, and remembrances of the 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph>, compiled by E. Leonard Lambert. Lambert was involved in the Burton Island Association, which was formed by former shipmates who served on the 
                <emph render="italic">Burton Island</emph> to memorialize their time on the ship.</p>
