            <abstract id="ref9" label="Abstract">In 1965, Palmer Station was established in Antarctica as part of the expansion of the U.S. Antarctic Program. In 1968, the research vessel 
                <emph render="italic">Hero</emph> was acquired by the National Science Foundation and based at Palmer Station. The vessel provided transportation and mobile laboratories to scientists studying the ocean surrounding Antarctica. It was in operation until 1984, when it was replaced by the research vessel 
                <emph render="italic">Polar Duke</emph>. The National Science Foundation Research Vessel 
                <emph render="italic">Hero</emph> Photograph and 
                <emph render="italic">Polar Duke</emph> Information Sheet contains an official color photograph of the Research Vessel 
                <emph render="italic">Hero</emph> on the Palmer Peninsula of Antarctica, published by the National Science Foundation. An accompanying label indicates the photo was taken March 11, 1969. It also includes an information sheet from the National Science Foundation Division of Polar Programs on the 
                <emph render="italic">Polar Duke</emph>, dated December 31, 1985.</abstract>

            <p>The National Science Foundation is an agency of the United States government that supports education and research in science and engineering, including programs in polar research that fund the purchase of ships and submarines used for polar exploration. In 1965, Palmer Station was established in Antarctica as part of the expansion of the U.S. Antarctic Program. In 1968, the research vessel 
                <emph render="italic">Hero</emph> was acquired by the National Science Foundation and based at Palmer Station. The vessel provided transportation and mobile laboratories to scientists studying oceanography and marine biology, geology and geophysics in Antarctica. It was in operation until 1984, when it was replaced by the research vessel 
                <emph render="italic">Polar Duke</emph>.</p>

                <emph render="italic">Polar Duke</emph>, the ship that replaced the 
                <emph render="italic">Hero </emph>when it was retired in 1984. The sheet is dated December 31, 1985.</p>
