Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957) was an Admiral of the United States Navy and polar explorer. After flights over the Arctic and the Atlantic Ocean in 1926 and 1927, Byrd raised funding for and led the Byrd Antarctic Expedition I from 1928-1930, and the Byrd Antarctic Expedition II from 1933-1935. The first expedition included a flight over the South Pole in 1929, and led to Byrd’s promotion to rear admiral. He then led his first government-backed expedition, the United States Antarctic Service Expedition, from 1939-1940. He also helped fund this expedition, including donating the one of the two ships used on the trip,

The scrapbooks about Byrd contain clippings from magazines and newspapers about Byrd in general as well as his first two expeditions, postal covers from Antarctica, fliers advertising Byrd's public appearances, and a note written from Byrd indicating he had viewed the scrapbook. They also contain handwritten captions and typed essays about Byrd written by Burandt, and letters sent to Burandt from Byrd and his secretary. The United States Antarctic Service Expedition scrapbook is composed mainly of clippings about the expedition, and contains a music score for "Byrd (You're the 'Byrd' of Them All)" by Howard Johnson.
