Biographical Note

George A. Lewis was born in Tarrytown, New York in 1937. As a United States Navy member, he served in California, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Antarctica. During Operation Deep Freeze 61, Lewis was sent to Antarctica, where he worked with Task Force 43 to establish a permanent base to support scientists in polar research. The first permanent American station established at the South Pole, called "Old Byrd," only lasted four years before collapsing, so a New Byrd underground station was constructed beginning in 1960. It was later known as the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.
