They have been used historically on postal covers sent from polar regions, and usually relate to a university, expedition or season. The Institute of Polar Studies Cachet Rubber Stamp and Exhibit Materials contain a rubber stamp printed with a cachet used by glaciologists from the Institute of Polar Studies at Ohio State University on their mailing envelopes during the 1983-1984 field season in Antarctica. The collection also contains an exhibit label describing the stamp's history and the expedition, and an envelope stamped with the cachet for display purposes. The items were used together in the 2015 Ohio State University Thompson Library exhibition, "Mysteries in Ice."

<p>"Mysteries in Ice" was an Ohio State University Libraries exhibit that was curated by the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Archival Program. The display's purpose was to teach about polar exploration and its relationship to the climate, as well as celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Archival Program. The Program collects materials related to the exploration of the world's polar regions, including materials from the Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, which was originally named the Institute of Polar Studies.</p>
