Lois M. Jones (1935-2000) was an American geochemist who led the first all-women expedition to Antarctica from 1969-1970. Her Ohio State University team spent several weeks doing fieldwork in Antarctica's McMurdo Dry Valleys region, and some of them, including Jones, became the first women in history to reach the South Pole. Following the expedition, Jones taught at the University of Georgia from 1969-1977, followed by sixteen years as a petroleum geologist for Conoco Inc. After a brief tenure at Kansas State University, she retired. Jones died March 13, 2000, at the age of 65.
